HOOVER, Herbert (1874-1964), President . Printed document signed ("Herbert Hoover"): A Proclamation by the President of the United States Announcing the Death of the Honorable Calvin Coolidge , Countersigned by Secretary of State Henry L. Stimson, Washington, D.C. 5 January 1933. 1 page 4to, printed within black borders . THE DEATH OF A PRESIDENT. Even this solemn official proclamation takes note of "Silent Cal's" taciturnity: "His name had become in his own lifetime a synonym for sagacity and wisdom; and his temperateness in speech and his orderly deliberation in action bespoke the profound sense of responsibility which guided his conduct of the public business." President Hoover orders "that the flags of The White House and of the several departmental buildings be displayed at half staff for a period of thirty days, and that suitable military and naval honors...be rendered on the day of the funeral." A RARE PROCLAMATION.
