HONDIUS, Henricus (1597-1651). India quae Orientalis dicitur, et Insulae Adiacentes . Amsterdam: Johannes Janssonius [c.1642]. Hand-coloured engraved map, (390 x 485mm). Three baroque cartouches (very lightly browned, a few light spots). A fine map of Southeast Asia and Australia which is also important in the history of the mapping of Australia. It includes the Indian subcontinent, part of Japan, the northern coastline of New Guinea, all of the East Indies, the Philippines and the Maldives and other island groups in addition to an early glimpse of Australia. Tooley, in his Printed Maps of Australia , notes that in this map 'Australia is represented by ... 'Landt van d'Endracht and part of the coast of Carpentria ... one of the earliest Dutch maps to show the beginning of the mapping of Australia.' Tooley Australia 721. BLAEU, Johannes (1596-1673). Three figural cartouches, one with the title, the second with the dedication to the Laurens Real, Governor General of the East Indies with his arms above, the third containing the scale, compass rose. Window mount. An attractive map published in Blaeu's Atlases from 1635. Laurens Real was Governor General of the East Indies 1616-18. Blaeu was Hydrographer to the VOC, the Dutch East India Company. JANSSON, Jan (1588-1664). Indiae Orientalis nova descriptio . Amsterdam, [c.1645]). Hand-coloured engraved map, (405 x 520mm). Three cartouches, one with title flanked by two figures, the second with the imprint, the third with the scales flanked by two mythical sea creatures, two compass roses, window mount. An attractive map covering an area from Burma in the west, Malaya, the Indonesian islands, Indo-China, the Philippines and southern China and parts of New Guinea in the far south east of the map. It is also the first printed record of the voyage of the Dutch ship the Dufken to Cape York, the VOC having suppressed the information. (3)
