Henry John On the Laws and Practice of Horse Racing, first edition, half-title, advertisement leaf and 16pp. publishers' catalogue at end, contemporary ink inscription of Frederick Barne on title and manuscript note on half-title and front free endpaper, advertisements on pastedowns, inscribed "Michael Seth-Smith from John Hislop January 1982" on front pastedown over Barne bookplate, hinges weak, rear free endpaper defective, original blind-stamped limp green cloth titled in gilt on upper cover, g.e., rubbed and slightly stained, spine with author's name in ink and faded, [Loder 255], 12mo, Baily Brothers, 1850. *** Scarce; COPAC lists 3 copies of the first edition (BL, National Library of Scotland, Oxford, and possibly Cambridge but no date given for the last).Henry John Rous (1795-1877) is regarded as one of the fathers of horse-racing. This work on the laws of the sport caused him to be known as the "Blackstone of the Turf".interesting association copy given by the jockey, breeder and writer John Hislop to the racing author and commentator Michael Seth-Smith.
