Beschreibung:

HOMANN, Johann Baptist (1664-1724). [ Grosser Atlas . Nuremberg: 1744.] 2° (520 x 300mm). 121 hand-coloured double-page engraved maps (of 125). (Lacking four maps, 10 maps with margins torn and restored, lacking title, register of maps restored.) Contemporary calf (joints cracked, corners rubbed). Provenance : I.C.L. de Ortowski (manuscript note on front free endpaper dated 1846). Homann's Grosser Atlas was first published in 1716 by Johann Homann, the founder of the famous Nuremberg map publishing house. It quickly became the standard gentleman's library atlas around Europe, particularly in German-speaking areas, and competed with the productions of the great French map houses of the early 18th century. After Johann's death in 1724 his son ran the business until his death in 1730 and then the firm became Homann Heirs, a combination of family and other geographers who pursued the commercial atlas market with considerable success. The Grosser Atlas was reissued in 1631 and remained available for many years. Sold as an atlas not subject to return.
