Nuremberg: Homann heirs, ca 1789. 2 o (505 x 323 mm). 37 engraved double page maps ALL COLORED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND. (The map of the Americas pasted onto lower pastedown.) Contemporary sheep (worn). Homann's Maior Atlas was first published in 1716 by Johann Homann, the founder of the famous Nuremberg map publishing house. It quickly became the standard gentleman's library atlas around Europe, particularly in German-speaking areas. After Johann's death in 1724 his son ran the business until his death in 1730 and then the firm became Homann Heirs, a combination of family and other geographers who pursued the commercial atlas market with considerable success.
