HOLLAND, HENRY Album of topographical and costume drawings titled 'Sketches in Turkey and Greece, 1812' oblong 8vo (150 x 260mm.), 35 sketches on paper, pen and ink and grey wash over pencil, contemporary half vellum, mottled paper boards, upper cover titled in pen and ink 'Turkey & Greece', binding slightly rubbed HENRY HOLLAND'S SKETCHBOOK containing the original drawings for eight of the plates (plates 1-7 and 9) published in his Travels in the Ionian Isles, Albania, Thessaly, Macedonia, etc. (1815); see lot 57 in the library of a Greek bibliophile (L20422). This work describes Holland's travels in Greece and the Levant in 1812-13, during which time he spent two months in Albania as physician to Ali Pasha. Holland later became president of the Royal Institution, and personal physician to Queen Victoria. See also lot 146. The sketches include: the ruins of Nicopolis; bridge over the Aracthos near Arta; 'khan of Cinque Pozzi in Albania'; costume drawings (Albanian, Turkish soldier, and Tartar of Ali Pasha); several views in and around Ioannina; Metsovo; views in Meteora and its monasteries; Mount Ossa from Larissa; vale of Tempe; Delphi; Livadia; Thebes; and a view from the Seraglio of Suli.Condition ReportCondition is described in the main body of the cataloguing, where appropriate.
