HOCKNEY, David (b.1937) – SPENDER, Stephen (1909-1995). Hockney's Alphabet. London: Faber and Faber for the Aids Crisis Trust, 1991. Special limited edition of Hockney's Alphabet, extra-illustrated with a full-page portrait of Spender by Hockney, and inscribed with a 5-line poem ‘To David Hockney’ by Spender. This is number 20 of 250 copies numbered in Arabic, signed by Hockney, Spender and 22 of the contributors. From the collection of the founder of the Aids Crisis Trust, the late Marguerite Littman. The book was published to support the Aids Crisis Trust and raise money for people living with AIDS. It was edited by Spender and contains contributions inspired by a letter of the alphabet written by himself, Joyce Carol Oates, Iris Murdoch, Paul Theroux, Gore Vidal, Norman Mailer, Seamus Heaney, Martin Amis, Erica Jong Ian McEwan, Nigel Nicolson, Margaret Drabble, Craig Raine, William Boyd, V.S. Pritchett, Doris Lessing, William Golding, T.S. Eliot, Arthur Miller, Ted Hughes, Kazuo Ishiguro, Julian Barnes, John Updike, Susan Sontag, Anthony Burgess, Douglas Adams and Patrick Leigh Fermor. Each contribution is paired with an illustration by Hockney. Folio (323 x 243mm). 27 colour lithographic plates by David Hockney depicting A-Z and an Ampersand. Original quarter vellum over handmade Fabriano Roma paper-covered boards (a few marks to covers, lacking the slipcase). Provenance: [Marguerite Littman (1930-2020)].
