(Plate of "First Gate of the Seraglio" with caption slightly cropped, not affecting image, occasional offsetting onto text.) Modern half green morocco, spine gilt in six compartments with red morocco lettering-piece, g.e. Provenance : AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY to Dr. William Vincent, the Dean of Westminster (1739-1815; inscription from "his grateful pupil and humble sevt., The Author", on title). A FINE PRESENTATION COPY of the second edition, first issue, of the famous Journey through Albania on which Hobhouse accompanied Lord Byron in 1809-10. As well as the title inscription, there are three full pages of notes in Hobhouse's writing, inserted between pp. 132 and 133 of volume I, which discuss the history of the ancient Macedonians and the current whereabouts of their descendants, and include a lengthy reference to Ludovicus Tubero's 1746 commentary on the subject. There are also minor corrections in Hobhouse's hand on page 132, and to the plates facing pages 253 and 336. Hobhouse was educated at Westminster, where William Vincent was a greatly respected headmaster between 1788 and 1802. According to the DNB "His swinging pace, sonorous quotations and especially his loud call of "Eloquere, puer, eloquere" ("Speak out, boy, speak out") dwelt long in the memory of his scholars". In later years, Vincent devoted his attention to the study of ancient geography, including classical voyages, so his former pupil's work, and the additional notes in this copy, would have been of particular interest to him. The second edition of the A Journey through Albania appeared in the same year as the first, and has the errata corrected and a few changes in the preliminary material.
