HIERONYMUS, Saint. Vita di sancti padri vulgare hystoriata , Venice: Bartolomeo Zanni for Lucantonio Giunta, 3 September 1509.
HIERONYMUS, Saint. Vita di sancti padri vulgare hystoriata , Venice: Bartolomeo Zanni for Lucantonio Giunta, 3 September 1509. 2 o (305 x 209 mm). Zanni's woodcut device on title, 2 woodcut borders (the second repeated five times), half-page woodcut on b1r, 101 small woodcuts in the text. (Title with some pale staining, some occasional pale dampstaining, worming in lower margins of last two gatherings.) Contemporary wooden boards, later calf spine. Provenance : unidentified pale inkstamp on title; acquired from Scribner's, 1969. Tenth illustrated edition recorded by Sander. Most of the woodcuts in this edition were made for this text and first used in the Giunta edition of 1491. The 1491 blocks passed through the hands of at least three other printers before coming to Zanni for this edition for Guinta, and he reused them again for the edition he published alone in 1512. The first page of book I, with the St. Paul cut, is enclosed in a border with trophies and a blank shield, used in a Ragazzo-Guinta Bible of 1492. The border block for book II is from a 1491 Dante printed by Bernardino Benalio and Matteo Copodecasa (see lot 156) and is repeated on books 3-6 in the present edition. Essling 575; Mortimer Italian 234 (1512 edition); Sander 3414.
