Collation : [1-2 1 0 3-4 8 ; 5-8 1 0 ; 9-12 1 0 ; 13-15 1 0 ; 16-19 1 0 ; 20-21 1 0 22 8 23 1 0 ]. 223 leaves (of 224; without final blank 23/10). Gothic type 2:112. 50 lines, double column. 8-line initial "D" illuminated on fo. 3 r in red, blue and green with red and blue penwork infill and extensions; Lombard initials rubricated in red and blue; chapter headings rubricated, capital strokes and some paragraph marks in red. (Some leaves lightly browned, lower corner chipped on 6/3, 11/8-9 with tears on lower gutter margins, otherwise a fine tall copy, with most pinholes preserved.) 19th-century maroon morocco gilt (rebacked, binding dried with some chips and wear). Provenance : 15th-century marginalia -- H.C.L. Morris, M.D. (bookplate) -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from Maggs Bros., London, 19 June 1942) -- donated to SMS 27 July 1942. Probably the third printed collection of Jerome's letters, an independent recension from those of the two prededing Rome editions (Goff H-160, -163). The correspondence of St. Jerome is of great interest and historical importance. These letters, which met with great initial success among his contemporaries, are considered, along with the 'Confessions' of St. Augustine, one of the most influential works on the humanists of the Renaissance. BMC I,53 (IC.517); CIBN H-96; Harvard/Walsh 52-53; HC *8549; Pr 203; Goff H-162.
