HIERONYMUS (340-420 A.D.). Vita et transitus (i.e. EUSEBIUS CREMONENSIS. Epistola de morte Hieronymi . - AUGUSTINUS. Epistola de magnificentiis Hieronymi . - CYRILLUS. De miraculis Hieronymi ), in Italian: La vita et transito. - Certi miracoli. - Certi detti dei santi , etc. [Venice:] Bartholomaeus Cremonensis, [not after July] 1473. Median 4° (228 x 157mm). Collation: [1-6 10 7 . . 8-11 10 12 8 13 6 ] (1/1r table, 1/3r life of St. Jerome, 1/10v blank, 2/1r Eusebius's letters, 7/3r St. Augustine's letters, 7/12v venerable Cyrill's letters, 13/1r sayings of the saints, 12/5v prayers to St. Jerome, 13/6r colophon, 13/6v blank). 126 leaves (the first quire misbound at end). 28 lines, guide-letters. Type: 2:113 R. Opening Venetian white-vine initial 'A' in burnished gold with coloured extensions filling the page and terminating in sunbursts, most 2- to 4-line initials supplied in red or blue. (Neat repairs to inner margin of about 6 leaves, ownership signature erased from lower margin of 2/1, some spotting, mainly at margins, some marginal soiling.) 17th-century vellum with yapp edges, spine with raised bands titled in manuscript (spine torn at head, recased). A RARE PUBLICATION FROM THIS SHORT-LIVED PRESS. Bartholomaeus Cremonensis worked alone in 1472 and 1473, and in partnership with Bartholomaeus (de Carlo) Vercellensis in 1474, after which he disappears, having produced some nine books. The life of St. Jerome is finely printed in his large text type, extremely like Jenson's, if less broad in proportion to its height. The verse colophon shows him to have been a type-cutter as well as a printer. H 8637; GW 9456; BMC V, 209 (IB. 20021); IGI 3733; Goff H-247.
