Herne, Brian
Uganda Safaris
The chronicle of a professional hunter's adventures in Africa
Published: Winchester Press, Tulsa, Oklahoma 74114, 1979 ISBN 0876913168
Hardback with unclipped dustcover over original red boards with gilt antelope head to upper board, gilt lettering to spine. Here is Uganda as it was before the rise of Idi Amin and as it will be again. The story is told by a highly respected professional hunter who knows East Africa well. Brian Herne has, in fact, spent more time hunting in Uganda than any other living hunter. Anthony Dyer- another notable authority on Africa and President of the East African Professional Hunters' Association- observes in his foreword that Herne's safari descriptions and hunting narratives are authentic and exciting, but that "there is far more to this book than pure hunting. There are vivid pictures of the country, its history and its people. Through all this is woven an intimate account of the professional hunters themselves." Here, too, is a witty, warm, and perceptive account of the sportsmen and sportswomen encountered on safari. These people included the unknown and the famous, good hunters and poor ones, wise and foolish, a fascinating gallery of characters. There are many who appreciated the grandeur of the game as well as the beauty of the country, and a few who had to learn that wildlife is a precious resource requiring diligent conservation. Many books have been written about East Africa, but nothing in recent years matches this one for its authority on the cradle of the Nile, a vast garden where wild animals reign supreme. Title. Dedication. Contents. Acknowledgements. Author's Note. Historical Note. Foreword. xx plus 236 pages text with supporting photographic illustrations. Very clean copy. Jacket Condition: Very Good Binding Condition: Very Good Overall Condition: Very Good Size: 24 x 16.5 cm
