HERDER, Johann Gottfried (1744-1803). Herder demande à son éditeur d’enlever une partie [contenant son poème Der deutsche Nationalruhm ] de ses Briefe zur Beförderung der Humanität , qui causera un embarras inutile. Il précise que, par chance, il s’agit de la dernière lettre de cette partie du travail, aussi personne ne devrait remarquer son absence, à condition que la page de contenu soit réimprimée. Toutes les corrections récentes envoyées par Herder concernant également cette partie du livre en cours peuvent maintenant être ignorées. Il implore sincèrement son correspondant qu'aucun exemplaire du texte non corrigé soit distribué, sans quoi la lettre incriminée sera inévitablement réimprimée – le style de Herder est trop reconnaissable. La lettre se conclue avec une référence à l’ « Inedita » de Diderot, et une reformulation de sa demande au regard de la publication. Les Briefe zur Beförderung der Humanität de Herder ont été publiées en dix parties, entre 1793 et 1797. La lettre annulée contenait le poème de Herder sur la gloire nationale allemande, qu’il attribuait à une force morale découlant paradoxalement d’une faiblesse politique, plaçant les allemands aux côtés d’autres peuples colonisés et soumis. Conformément à ses instructions, le poème est annulé dans presque tous les exemplaires survivants des Lettres, et n'a été publié qu'après la mort de Herder. Herder asks his editor to remove a section [comprising his poem, ‘Der deutsche Nationalruhm’] from his Briefe zur Beförderung der no Humanität , which will cause an unnecessary embarrassment: fortunately it is the last letter in that part of the work, and no one will notice its absence, provided the contents page is reprinted. All of the recent proof corrections Herder had sent also concerned this letter, so they may now be ignored. He earnestly begs his correspondent not to let a single example of the text be distributed, otherwise the offending letter will inevitably be reprinted – Herder’s style is too recognisable. The removal of the letter is a ‘duty of prudence and morality’ (‘Pflicht der Klugheit u[nd] Moral’). The letter concludes with a reference to the ‘Inedita ’ of Diderot, and a restatement of his request regarding the publication. Herder’s Letters for the Advancement of Humanity were published in 10 parts between 1793 and 1797. The cancelled letter comprised Herder’s poem on German national glory, which he attributes to a moral strength which derives paradoxically from their political weakness, placing them alongside other colonised and subjugated peoples. In accordance with his instructions, the poem is cancelled in almost all surviving copies of the Letters , and was not published until after Herder’s death.
