Herbarius Latinus]. Tractatus de Virtutibus herbarum. Venice: Joannes Rubeus and Bernardinus fratres, of Vercelli, 15 March 1509. Chancery 4to, 209 x 151mm. (8 1/4 x 6 in.), contemporary quarter blind-tooled calf over wooden boards, spine in three compartments, remains of two brass clasps, "herbarium" lettered in ink on lower cover and lower edges, lower cover cracked and with old cord repair, rebacked, endpapers renewed, one to two small wormholes through text block of first 26 leaves, some mostly marginal foxing or discoloration, occasional slight marginal dampstaining . Collation : A4 a-x8. 172 leaves, including final blank. 150 numbered half-page woodcuts (several misnumbered), reprinted from the earlier Italian editions of 1491 and 1499, one 5-line black-on-white woodcut initial and numerous smaller white-on-black initials; two or three leaves with paragraph marks supplied in brown ink. RARE. Adams H-298; Hunt I, 19; Nissen 2311; Ahumada 8. Provenance : A few early marginal notes; Juan Carlos Ahumada bookplate; the present owner.
