The genealogy was prepared for the Dutch branch of the Clifford family, founded by George Clifford, the second son of a prebend of Stow, Lincs, who moved to Amsterdam between the years 1634 and 1640. His descendants were bankers, merchants and patricians, based in Amsterdam and on their estate at Hartekamp in Heemstede. George Clifford III (1685-1780) was a patron of Linnaeus, whose Hortus Cliffortianus is devoted to the garden at Hartekamp. The present volume was reproduced in print, no doubt for private circulation within the family, with the elaborate title page engraved by the Amsterdam engraver Nicolaas van Frankendaal (1720-1791).
