HENSCHKE Johann Christian Henschke began making wine in the mid-1860s and sold his first wines commercially in 1868. The estate is now run by the fifth generation, winemaker Stephen Henschke and his viticulturalist wife, Prue. Henschke makes Mount Edelstone and Hill of Grace Shiraz from some of the oldest vines (up to 140 years of age) in Australia. The flagship wine - Hill of Grace - is made entirely from a single vineyard planted in the 1860s with pre-phylloxera vines brought by European settlers. This historic eight hectare vineyard gains its name from the local church built of the local field stone also likely contained in the surrounding soil. Planted mostly to Shiraz with a little Mataro (Mouvèdre), Hill of Grace is a sublime articulation of the heights Aussie Shiraz can reach. The fruit is harvested with several passes through the vineyard and vinified separately to convey soil and vine variations. Stephen's father, Cyril Alfred was the first to create Hill of Grace in 1958 and this rare vertical offering traces the progression of this great wine.
