Document signed, a Life Grant for John Gate of the offices of Keeper of the mansion in Southwark formerly belonging to Charles, Duke of Suffolk, of Bailiff of lands in Southwark and in Parys Garden and of Bermondsey Abbey, and Clerk of the market at Southwark, in Latin, 31 lines written in brown ink on vellum, approximately 270 x 335mm., signed by the King at the head, countersigned at the foot by Sir Edward North (Chancellor of the Court of Augmentations), n.p. Westminster 30 December 1546, annotations written in a later hand beneath North's signature and on a vellum leaf (270 x 170mm.) attached to the document by stitches in the outer margin (discoloured, water stain in right hand portion of document without loss of words, splitting down centre, repaired with tape on verso). Issued in the last weeks of Henry VIII's reign, with his fine, clear signature. John Gate was a Gentleman of the Privy Chamber. The Grant confers upon him as well as estates formerly belonging to the Duke of Suffolk, former Steward of the Royal Household, the site of the house once in the possession of Thomas à Becket, with extensive lands in Essex and elsewhere. The Court of Augmentations was created by Henry VIII to administer the properties acquired for the Crown in the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
