HENRY F. BOYLE and DAVID SCOTT
HENRY F. BOYLE and DAVID SCOTT Australian Cricketers' Guide for 1879-80 Melbourne: Kemp Bros., 1880. 8vo., pagination: 184p. (- 4p. advertisements at front) + 6 final advertisement leaves, pp. 116-120 with diagrams of field-placings (lacking preliminary advertisements and the mounted portrait called for by Padwick), contemporary red half roan, top edge gilt (extremities rubbed). FIRST ISSUE "containing the tour of the Australian Eleven in the Colonies and England; the intercolonial matches; and all the principal matches of the season 1879-80". The valuable account of "The Australian Eleven in England" (pp. 166-181) is given by Boyle, who was a member of the team. The concluding match, England v. Australia, at Kennington Oval, 6-8 September 1879, was in his view "the greatest match in the annals of cricket" even though Spofforth was absent and Australia lost by 5 wickets. The first issue also included obituaries of three veteran cricketers, Thomas Wentworth Wills, who had commited suicide on 2 May, Richard Driver, and James Southerton (pp. 156-57). Padwick 3362.
