Engraved frontispiece portrait by R. Maverick. (Some pale browning and spotting.) Contemporary tree sheep, red morocco lettering piece (lightly rubbed at extremities). Provenance : Weir, Harrisburg, Penn. (inscription on pastedown, signature on title); Thomas W. Streeter (penciled notes on front free endpaper; his sale Parke Bernet, Part VI, 23 April 1969, lot 3661). FIRST EDITION. Henry was one of the most adventurous of the English fur traders active before the Revolution, and ventured at an early date deep into French-dominated Indian territory, including Fort Michillimakinac and the mouth of the Saskatchewan. He was born in New Jersey in 1739 and moved to Montreal in 1760 to engage in the fur trade. His descriptions of his travels west and north to Lake Superior are among the first to achieve wide circulation. Not all copies were issued with the portrait. This copy includes not only the portrait but the errata leaf at end.
