HEMINGWAY, Ernest. Typed letter signed ("Mister Papa" in pencil) to an unidentified good friend ("Dear Franco"), Finca Vigia, San Francisco de Paula, Cuba, 28 July 1949. 1 page, 4 o, single-spaced on a sheet of Strathmore gray laid paper, Hemingway's address imprinted in darker gray at top, with an 18-word initialled holograph postscript in pencil by him, fold creases, several minute marginal pinholes. [With] : A typed letter signed from Hemingway's wife Mary to the same participant, Cortina, Italy, 12 April [1950], 1 p., 4 o, double-spaced, signed ("Mary") in pencil and with a holograph postscript in pencil, wrinkled . "I COULD NOT FUCK FOR QUITE A TIME" "You poor, dear old timer. Mary and I have felt so sorry for your accident and so sad for you...It is so damned unlucky and awful. We have both had bad motor car accidents and know what it is about. You must take it easy and everything will be fine. I remember that I had the front of my head smashed very badly one time and it made me so I could not fuck for quite a time (nearly two months). So if you have that symptom it is normal and give it no importance. Afterwards you will fuck too much again; as we all do. There is no news here...We go out in the boat on Saturday and Sunday and in the week I work very hard writing [on Across the River and Into the Trees ] and so far...I write very well every day. (Must keep my fingers crossed). It is very here now and I feel awful to be enjoying it and knowing you are suffering. Poor old Fox...Remember nothing lasts and that you will be fine if you take it calmly and easily. This from a man who once had seven major concussions in three years and remained a writer...What fine times we used to have sitting out on the terrace of The Poor Man's Pocol!..." (2)
