"I HAVE THE MANUSCRIPT, FINALLY, OF 'THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD'" "...We miss you, too very much. Have had a good summer. Will send some pictures when they come back from the developers. Poor old pappa has a beard you could hunt a pack of beagles through if there were only rabbits in it. Pauline is in grand shape. We've had the best summer ever..." Hemingway writes of fishing rods he is sending, a possible visit from his son Bumby, etc., and continues: "...Damn I can't wait until we get out in the gulf again and see those tails -- the big ones like a scythe blade -- slipping backwards through the water -- now you see it (Jane sees it) now we all see it -- now it's gone -- Now you see it again -- mas machina, hombre, mas machina ! -- and a cold bottle of Crystal [beer] in one hand..." "I have the manuscript, finally of 'The Light of the World' [a Nick Adams story] -- it's ready to send. Had to get it right and then copy it and the typewriter was busted. This is the original. Would enclose it now but reading it over it has so many words they do not print that you had better ask me for it. Then your blood is on your own head and I did not send you too rough a manuscript through the mail unsolicited. It has a lot of or rather a few places that they won't print but it's a lovely story [it would appear in Winner Take Nothing , published the following year]. The book [ Death in the Afternoon ] comes out Sept. 23..." Hemingway closes by discussing his upcoming plans: "...Then Key West from January [1933] until come to Havana ( working like hell ) and Havana until we catch the biggest marlin that I have ever lied about -- then go to Africa. Then what you ask if you are still following this -- Well then we will probably be following the second garbage boat out of Havana harbor looking for bottles..."
