A RARE JOINING TOGETHER OF A FAMOUS LITERARY COUPLE in this joint letter from Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hemingway, to their ex-patriot American friend William Davis in Mexico City. "Ernest and I are coming to Mexico the 18th of this month (I hope)," Gellhorn writes, and she asks for hotel recommendations and climate advice for their clothes packing. Ernest Hemingway's endorsement beneath her signature expresses the hope to see some bull fights with Davis and his concern that they have "no publicity" during their visit. Martha Gellhorn was about to embark on a series of foreign assignments for Collier's magazine, for which she had written for many years, dating back to the Spanish Civil War. Credentialed only for rear-echelon human interest stories, supposedly befitting a woman reporter, Gellhorn snuck aboard a landing craft to Normandy as a nurse. When her more famous husband arrived in the European Theater of Operations he promptly supplanted her as Collier's correspondent in the field. The marriage had been fracturing before that, but the feeling that Hemingway pushed her aside infuriated and embittered Gellhorn the rest of her life. She could not abide being asked about him in interviews, and in a memoir of their travel experiences she could not bring herself to even write his name (referring to him only as "Another Person"). THE COMBINATION OF BOTH THEIR SIGNATURES ON A LETTER IS RARE. No other example has appeared at auction in 40 years. NOT PUBLISHED.
