HEMINGWAY, Ernest. An autograph letter signed ("E. Hemingway" and "Ernest") to Richard and Jane Armstrong and an autograph note signed ("Hemingstein") to Richard Armstrong in Havana; written in Havana and possibly Key West, n.d. [1930s]. Together, 3 pages, 12 o, the letter in pencil on Steamship Cuba stationery, the note in ink on verso of a printed form (a blank corner chipped), each with unstamped envelope addressed by Hemingway. The letter: "This valuable holograph will be delivered by Charlie Cook who has come over to Havana with his daughter. If you can do anything to amuse them such as taking a drink or describing the politcal situation you will again obligate your old friend and colleague E. Hemingway. Wish the hell I was coming--Cook will tell you our news--Pauline [his second wife] is fine..." The note: "Here is the dough. I can't ever give you my thanks. Will come in and see you and tell you how much... Marty [Martha Gellhorn, to be his third wife] fine. Kids here..." Neither is in Letters , ed. C. Baker, and each is presumably unpublished. Provenance : Anonymous owner (sale Christie's East 21 February 1996, lot 138). (2)
