HEMINGWAY, Ernest (1899-1961). Autograph letter signed ("Papa") to Leonard Lyons, Finca Vigia, San Francisco de Paula, Cuba, 6 October 1951. 1 page, 4to, in blue cloth folding case . HEMINGWAY FROM CUBA ON THE DEATH OF HIS SECOND WIFE PAULINE PFEIFFER Just five days after the death of his ex-wife Pauline Pfeiffer, from whom he had an acrimonious separation a decade before, Hemingway writes to critic Leonard Lyons to explain why he is not entertaining any visitors. "Thanks for your note of October 2. I would have been delighted to entertain your friends the Boyds but because of Pauline's death we are not making any engagements. Am sure both you and they will understand. When they are here another time we will get together. Hope everything goes well with you and all of yours." Pauline Pfeiffer was Hemingway's second wife, whom he married in 1927. His affair with Martha Gellhorn ended the marriage, and he and Gellhorn moved to Finca Vigia in Cuba in 1940. Pauline died suddenly on 1 October 1951, just a few days prior to this letter, and not long after a bitter, argumentative phone conversation with Hemingway.
