Beschreibung:

HEINE, Heinrich (1797-1856). Buch der Lieder Hamburg: Hoffmann and Campe, 1827. 8 o (159 x 102mm). Small vignette on title (lacks half title, some foxing). Contemporary red cloth, spine ruled and lettered in gilt. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE WITH THE RARE, AND LATER SURPRESSED, DEDICATION LEAVES, one to Salomom Heine (p.107), and one to Friedericke Varnhagen von Ense (p.175) not including that to Friedrich Merkel. Buch der Lieder is Heine's earliest and most important collection of poems. Although it eventually received great acclaim (and went through thirteen editions during Heine's lifetime and numerous posthumous editions) the first edition sold poorly for a decade. 2,000 copies were printed in October 1827 and a second edition was not called for until 1837. By that time, Heine's reputation as a poet, and not just a satirist, had begun to rise and the importance of the Buch der Lieder was fully established. Steinbrink, Hoffmann und Campe 1827-4; Wilpert-Gühring 4.
