HEIDEN, Jan van der, the Elder (1637-1712). Beschryving der nieuwlyks uitgevonden en geoctrejeerde slang-brand-spuiten, en haare wyze van brand-blussen tegenwoordig binnen Amsterdam in gebruik zijnde . Amsterdam: the heirs of Jan van der Heiden, 1735. 2 o (459 x 282 mm). Engraved title-vignette. 25 engraved plates, 7 double-page, 19 with separately engraved captions, 20 with descriptive text in Dutch and French, woodcut tail-piece and initials. (A few folding plates with minor separation at margin folds.) Contemporary Dutch blind-tooled vellum (a bit bowed). Provenance : Frederick Heerwein, Jr. (inscription dated 1828 on front free endpaper); acquired from E.P. Goldschmidt, 1975. Second (enlarged) edition OF THE FINEST BOOK ON FIRE-FIGHTING. The celebrated Dutch painter of still-life paintings and views, Jan van der Heiden (who along with his son held the position of 'Generaale Brandmeester' of Amsterdam) describes and illustrates the use of their newly-invented fire-fighting hose and pump, and some of the major conflagrations of the period. Appalled by the clumsy fire-fighting methods of relying on buckets used during several fierce fires during the years 1669-84 (among them a fierce blaze that destroyed Jan Blaeu's printing works), he constructed a new flexible hose of canvas combined with a strong pump to overcome the freezing of the water in winter. The engravings are remarkable for the skill with which the fires are dramatically depicted amidst the buildings and street scenes of Amsterdam. The first edition of this elaborate treatise describing and illustrating the use of fire-fighting equipment in Amsterdam was published in 1690 with 19 plates. The plates illustrate the equipment, but also the mitigating effect of its employment at the scene of a fire. This edition includes the 6 additional plates illustrating the improvements to the equipment invented by the van der Heidens. A very fine, tall copy in its original binding. Cf. Graesse III, p.230-231 (1690 edition).
