Ordering another half-measure of the same 'pontak' as before, or if that barrel is exhausted, of the same quality ('Ich bin so frey, Sie wieder um ein halben Eymer von dem Pontak, von dem Sie mir das letztemal schick[t]en zu übermachen, oder wenn Sie nicht von demselben Faß mehr haben sollten, eine Qualität die ihr gleich kommt'), one page , 4to , integral address leaf, docket (seal tear). Provenance : Stargardt, 21 March 1996, lot 489; Christie's South Kensington, 13 June 2011, lot 219. Hegel had obtained a post as 'Privatdozent' at the university of Jena in the previous year under the aegis of Schelling, with whom he founded the Kritische Journal der Philosophie in 1802; the post was unsalaried, and he was often in financial straits at this period. Pontak, better known as 'teinturier du Cher', is a red grape variety once commonly grown in northern France and Germany.
