HEBREW MANUSCRIPT. Esther Scrolls. Illustrated Megillat Esther from Italy, 18th century. Hand-painted on vellum, 5 membranes, 167 mm. high, with 15 columns (137 x 177 mm.) of 19 lines. The scroll's decoratively-shaped opening panel displays an orientalized folk illustration of Haman leading Mordecai on horseback, accompanied by two festive horn-blowers. Text columns are enclosed in continuous red and yellow frames. Preserved with the megillah is its original, separate blessing panel (169 x 264 mm.), which contains in two columns the blessings recited before and after the megillah reading, and is framed with narrow red and yellow bands -- A second megillat Esther, probably Italian, of the 18th century, inscribed in brown ink on vellum. 5 membranes, 113 mm. high, with 21 columns (93 x 91 mm.) of 18 lines. The benedictions recited before the megillah's reading are written in a single column at the scroll's shaped beginning. Blessings and standard liturgical poem ( piyyut ) for after the reading inscribed at end. Mounted on wooden roller with coronet-form upper section. (2)
