HEBREW MANUSCRIPT. Esther Scrolls. Hand-painted Megillot Esther, the first illustrated on vellum, likely in Central Europe [Germany?], ca. 1800. 3 membranes, 158 mm. high, with 13 columns (120 x 97 mm.) of 27 lines. A ha-Melekh scroll with text panels separated by geometric pillars filled with foliate scrolls, colored in orange, green and yellow. Membranes glued. Enclosed in wooden revolving case -- The second: probably written in Central Europe, late 18th century. 4 membranes, 140 mm. high, with 18 columns (105 x 105 mm.) of 20 lines. Painted on vellum, mounted on a wooden roller. The scroll opens with a later illustration of a large, antlered buck amongst red and green flora and foliage, and continues along the borders with floral and foliate stems inhabited by birds and deer. The hanging of Haman's sons is naively-rendered within the text column describing this event. An illustration of Haman leading Mordecai on horseback (the "Triumph of Mordecai") closes the scroll. The initial text panel contains a standard liturgical poem ( piyyut ) -- An undecorated Megillat Esther from the Netherlands, 18th century. Brown ink on vellum, 3 membranes, 105 mm. high. 20 columns (75 x 58 mm.) of 19 lines. Mounted on contemporary ivory roller with floral finial and ivory pull-bar with ring. First membrane backed with pink silk -- Printed formulary, [Jerusalem, 1910-1919], on paper (470 x 304 mm.) in color with decorations appointing Rabbi Yisrael Zeligman from Middelburg [The Netherlands] to raise funds on behalf of Rabbiner Ch. J.L. Auerbach & S. Hurwitz, for "Schaar Haschamaim" in Jerusalem -- Megillat Esther, possibly Italy, 19th century. Hand-painted on vellum, 10 membranes, 314 mm. high. 21 columns, (130 x 120 mm.) of 17 lines. Later decorations show an unusual repertoire of animals, set within a continuous, schematic arcade that frames the text panels. A bear, raised on its hind legs, appears in the shaft of each column; paired dogs, birds, goats, butterflies, etc. fill the arches above. A framed heraldic device, topped by two nude putti and a floral vase, begins the scroll; a second device appears at the megillah's end. A separate blessing panel is included with the scroll. (5)
