HEBRAICA -- LEVITA, Elijah Ben Asher Ashkenazi ('Bachur', 1471-1549). Opusculum recens Hebraicum a ... Eliia Leuita Germano grammatico elaboratum, cui titulum fecit [Tishby] id est, Thisbites , translated by Paul Fagius. Isny: [Paul Fagius], 1541. 4° (205 x 150mm). Titles and text in Hebrew and Latin. Square Hebrew and roman types, woodcut initials, woodcut printer's device on 2b4v. (Some occasional light spotting, small flaws on [aleph]2, [gimel]2, and B1 touching text.) Contemporary calf, boards with central gilt oval tool, blind triple fillet panels with gilt fleuron cornerpieces, blind triplet fillet borders, turn-ins ruled in blind, traces of paper title-label in first spine compartment, others decorated with central gilt tools (a little rubbed and scuffed, spine ends chipped, splitting on joints, traces of repairs to spine head). Provenance : Benedictine Abbey of St Gallen (inscription and censor's note signed 'T. Chrys M[-] 1645' on Latin title; following the suppression of the Abbey in 1805:) -- Stiftsbibliothek St Gallen (booklabel with manuscript pressmark, marked as duplicate in pencil) -- Helmut N. Friedlaender (booklabel; sale Christie's New York, 24 April 2001, lot 355). FIRST EDITION. The Tishby , a dictionary of 712 Hebrew words in talmudic and post-talmudic language with a Latin translation by Fagius, is of major importance in the history of Hebrew grammar. It contains many examples of the pronunciation and vocalization of talmudic and post-talmudic Hebrew words by the German and Italian Jewish communities. Levita and Fagius published two issues, with and without a Latin translation. Adams E-124; Cowley 173; Fürst II, p. 241; Steinschneider Bibliographisches Handbuch 1167/2.
