HAYDEN, Ferdinand V. (1829-1887). Sun Pictures of Rocky Mountain Scenery . New York: Julius Bien 1870. 4 o (303 x 245 mm). 30 mounted albumen photographs by A.J. Russell (some minor toning to approximately 10 photographs, otherwise fine). (Pale stain at lower corner of first few leaves.) Modern green half morocco preserving portions of the publisher's black morocco spine. Provenance : Philip Sheridan (1831-1888), U.S. Army general (presentation inscription). FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED TO PHILIP SHERIDAN on the flyleaf: "To Lt. Gen. P.H. Sheridan with the Kind regard of the author New York City May 16 1871." After the Civil War, Sheridan was under orders to suppress American Indians in the West. For sixteen years, beginning in 1867, "Sheridan presided over the relentless hounding of the Plains Indian tribes, first leading a campaign against the Oklahoma Cheyenne that ended in the winter of 1868 with a massacre by a force under General George Custer of a Cheyenne village on the Washita River" ( ANB ). From 1867-1878, the time of this book's publication and inscription to Sheridan, Ferdinand V. Hayden worked for the Department of the Interior, directing an ambitious series of geologic and natural history surveys. He wrote: "The pictures have been arranged so as to commence with the first range of mountains west of Cheyenne, and to continue thence to Salt Lake Valley with the view that the book may be used as a guide by those who will avail themselves of the grand opportunities for geological study..." Russell's masterful photographs were taken along the line of the Pacific Railroad from Omaha to Sacramento. Hayden wanted to capitalize on interest in visual images of the West and to promote the study of geology. Hayden explains in the book: "The pictures have been arranged so as to commence with the first range of mountains west of Cheyenne, and to continue thence to the Salt Lake Valley with the view that the book may be used as a guide by those who will avail themselves of the grand opportunities for geological study..." Russell's images depict not only natural subjects but man-made structures in Wyoming, Utah and California. A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY of a book often found foxed and rarely found inscribed. Flake 3920; Howes H-337; Margolis To Delight the Eye 7; Sabin 31007; Truthful Lens 81.
