HAWKESWORTH, John (ca 1715-1773). A New Voyage, Round the World, in the Years 1768, 1769, 1770 and 1771; Undertaken by Order of his present Majesty, performed by Captain James Cook In the Ship Endeavour . New York: Printed by James Rivington, 1774. 2 volumes, 8 o (194 x 113 mm). 17-page list of subscribers. Three plates comprising: folding frontispiece in volume I BY PAUL REVERE (two tears and fold repaired on verso, with minute loss within image), folding frontispiece in volume II (stain in upper margin, restored on verso), folding map (small repaired tear). (Some mostly marginal repaired tears and small losses, some crossing text, some light browning as usual.) Modern red straight-grained half morocco, marbled boards, top edges gilt (joints a bit rubbed, front board of vol. I with small loss). FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. "A copy of this book not only has a place in literary history as the first American edition of Hawkesworth's account of Cook's first voyage, but to amateurs of the colonial book it is distinguished by the presence in it of a plate engraved by Paul Revere before the days of his Revolutionary fame, and of the first printed map from the hand of the engineer-cartographer Bernard Romans" ( JCB Annual Report ). Like the Streeter copy, this copy has only 17 pages of subscribers (not 18), and may indicate an earlier issue. The text of this edition is that of volumes 2 and 3 of the first edition printed in London, 1773. JCB Annuel Report for 1931, pp.12-15; Sabin 30936; Mitchell Library Cook 656; Holmes 9. (2)
