Beschreibung:

HAWAII] Album of approximately 58 albumen prints of Hawaiian views and ethnographic images , about 1880, on printing out paper mounted to card, most images 7 1/4 x 9 inches (225 x 180 mm). Binding lacking boards, a couple of leaves detached and others chipped, some marginal soiling, a few defects to images, but a rather unusual album. The last four images are of the obligatory native beauty; the first would appear to be a portrait of the traveller who assembled the album, who is no beauty. The images all appear to be offered by one of the island photographers. Some have titling in the images (e.g. Leper Settlement, Molokai). The numbering and titling of these appears to be that of the English photographer James J. Williams, 1853-1926, whose career in Hawaii appears to have started in about 1878. Some may be by Menzies Dickson, whose studio in Honolulu Williams took over in 1882. C
