HARRISON, John]. Memoirs of a Trait in the Character of George III of these United Kingdoms... by Johan Horrins . London, 1835. 8 o (224 x 142 mm). Contemporary muslin-backed boards, printed paper spine label, uncut (some wear and soiling, spine restored). Provenance : Mr. Thirwall (presentation inscription from the publisher?); his? inscription dated 1839 on the front pastedown). FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To Mr. Thirwall with the Author's compliments." The work was issued under the name "Johan Horrins," an anagram for John Harrison who had died in 1776. The inscription was most likely made at the time of publication by the publisher. According to the preface, the present work was meant to expand on earlier works relating to the Commission of Longitude, "to that state in which George 3d, from a humane spirit and the love of science, interfered, to rescue from unqualified oppression the aged Claimant of the second moiety of the reward of £20,000 for discovering the Longitude at sea..." (pp.iii-iv).
