(12 5/8 x 7 7/8in.), contemporary Scottish speckled calf, spines gilt with leaf and acorn clusters in panels, vol. 1 neatly rebacked with original backstrip laid down, joints cracked but sound, very slight tears to a few folding plates touching blank areas only, Hhh2 in vol. 2 torn, 5G2 in vol. 2 with tiny hole causing partial loss of two words, a few leaves browned. FIRST EDITIONS, titles printed in red and black, engraved portrait frontispiece and 14 engraved plates, mostly folding, numerous woodcut text illustrations. Grolier/Horblit 25a ("The earliest modern encyclopedia of science, containing the only writings of Newton on chemistry"); Babson Newton (Supplement) , p. 54.
