Guggenheim Foundation commented on "The Victim" as follows, " Between 1949 and 1950 [Tovish's] ideas became more explicit in a series of sculptures reflecting the emotions he had felt when, as an American soldier, he was exposed to the horrors of Nazi concentration camps at the end of the war ... the concept of man tortured and suffering to the point where humanity ceases to exist."
