Harold Tovish (American, 1921-2008) The Victim, edition of three. Signed and dated "H. Tovish 50." in the bronze on the figure's right thigh. Bronze with brown patina, 5 1/2 x 11 x 6 1/2 in. (13.9 x 27.9 x 16.5 cm), on a marble plinth, 13 x 6 1/2 x 4 in. (33.0 x 16.5 x 10.1 cm). Condition: Chips to base. Exhibitions: Harold Tovish Terry Dintenfass Inc., New York, March 2-27, 1965, Item II; Harold Tovish Twenty Years of Sculpture, Watson Gallery, Wheaton College, Massachusetts, March 5-April 16, 1967 Literature: Harold Tovish A Retrospective Exhibition, The Addison Gallery of American Art, Phillips Academy, Massachusetts, October 21, 1988-January 8, 1989, item #4, illustrated p. 22. Harold Tovish Twenty Years of Sculpture, Watson Gallery, Wheaton College, Massachusetts, March 5-April 16, 1967, illustrated p. 5. N.B. In the introduction to the Wheaton College exhibition catalogue (included with the lot), H. Harvard Arnason of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation commented on "The Victim" as follows, " Between 1949 and 1950 [Tovish's] ideas became more explicit in a series of sculptures reflecting the emotions he had felt when, as an American soldier, he was exposed to the horrors of Nazi concentration camps at the end of the war ... the concept of man tortured and suffering to the point where humanity ceases to exist."
