Harold Harvey (British 1874- 1941) The lady, Wheal Reeth Tin Mine, Breage Oil on canvas Signed and dated 34 lower right 87 x 128cm (34¼ x 50¼ in.) Provenance: Sale, Christie's, London, 8 June 2001, Lot 126 Sale, Christie's, London, 16 June 2005, Lot 141 Private Collection, UK Harold Harvey was born in Penzance in 1874 and trained at the Penzance School of Arts under Irish artist Norman Garston. Penzance during this time was becoming an artistic haven with artists making the pilgrimage to Cornwall. Artistic colonies such as the St. Ives artists and Newlyn School artists started to emerge. In 1894 Harvey went on to study at the Academie Julian in Paris until 1896. Harveys early works reflect his early Newlyn influences and so inspired was he by this school that when he married his model and fellow artist Gertrude Bodinnar, the pair moved to Newlyn. By 1910 Harveys style had started to change, he began to experiment with a brighter colour palette and moved away from depicting working class figures and focused on the rural landscape, marine themes and interior scenes. Harvey first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1898 and then continued to exhibit regularly between 1907 until 1941.
