"The small artist's books simply entitled either Bild (Picture) or Bilder (Pictures) that Hans Peter Feldmann made between 1968 and 1976, constitute ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT BODIES OF ARTIST'S BOOKWORKS IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY" ( The Photobook ). In 1968 Feldmann had given up painting in favor of found and mass-produced photographs. The Bilder series count amongst his earliest attempts to challenge the relationship between context and meaning: photographs "are without meaning or are at least blank canvases upon which we are free to construct meaning" ( The Photobook ). Complete with 10 booklets: Airplanes (1968), Knees (1969), Families (1970), 2 Girls (1970), Coat (1970), Shoes (1971), Mountains (1971), Clouds (1971), Football Players (1971), and Pyramid (1971).
