Full-length portrait of a young sailor of the Penascola. The Penascola was a screw steamer that served in the Civil War; in 1866 she was joined the Pacific Squadron, cruising from Chile to Puget Sound. William Shew was one of only three photographers operating in San Francisco at this time. This is a relatively early piece by him, dating from before his move to Montgomery Street. Lot Amendments Condition: A little modest soiling; near fine. Item number: 166518
