HANCOCK, John] Letter signed in clerical hand ("John Hancock president"), to the Convention of Maryland, Philadelphia, 4 July 1776. 1 page, folio, "Work & Be Rich" watermark . Text and signature in a secretarial hand.
HANCOCK, John] Letter signed in clerical hand ("John Hancock president"), to the Convention of Maryland, Philadelphia, 4 July 1776. 1 page, folio, "Work & Be Rich" watermark . Text and signature in a secretarial hand. "THE GREATEST EXERTION SHOULD BE MADE TO SAVE OUR COUNTRY FROM BEING DESOLATED BY THE HANDS OF TYRANNY" AN URGENT PLEA TO SEND TROOPS TO PHILADELPHIA AND "SUPPORT THE COMMON CAUSE". "The Congress have this day received intelligence," Hancock writes the Marylanders, "which renders it absolutely necessary that the greatest exertion should be made to save our Country from being desolated by the hands of Tyranny. Genl. Howe having taken possession of Staten Island, and the Jerseys being drained of their militias for the defense of New York, I am directed by Congress to request you will proceed immediately to embody your militia for the establishment of the Flying Camp, and march them with all possible expedition...to the city of Philadelphia." Hancock is confident that victory in the current campaign "will secure the enjoyment of our Liberties forever. All accounts agree that Great Britain will make the greatest effort this Summer. Should we therefore be able to keep our ground, we shall afterward have little to apprehend from her. I do therefore most ardently beseech and require you, in the name and by the authority of Congress, as you regard your own Freedom, and as you stand by the most solemn ties of Honour to support the Common Cause...Speedy compliance will prove the salvation of your country. It is impossible we can have any higher motive to induce us to act..." A remarkable statement--on the day Congress approved the Declaration of Independence--of the national consciousness and common purpose that emerged during the revolutionary struggle against Britain.
