Parallel text and engraved titles in French and English. 257 engraved plates on 252 leaves (one folding), engraved dedication to the Royal Society in vol.I. (Two plates in the 3rd vol. shaved, some light soiling or dampstaining). Contemporary half russia gilt (rebacked and cornered, original spines laid down). Provenance : W.J.Adam of Blair Adam (nephew of Robert and James Adam clipped signature mounted at front of vol.III). FIRST EDITION. A record of Sir William Hamilton's second collection of vases. Hamilton produced the text with the help of Prince Italinski, Russian Ambassador to Naples, the plates were engraved by William Tischbein, director of the Academy of Art in Naples. The collection was shipped to England in 1798 on board the Colossus, but part was lost off the Sicilies during the voyage. Cf. Blackmer 778 (3 volumes only). (3)
