Hale") discussing Carnegie Institute business including the tower telescope, 11 pp total, each roughly 175 x 115 mm, on different letterheads, February 28, 1908, to September 26, 1908, creases. 3. 15 Autograph and Typed Letters Signed from prominent scientists of the time to George Hale, each 1 p, on various papers, all dated from 1902. Hale was a leading American solar astronomer, known for his discovery of the magnetic properties of sunspots, but even more importantly for his tireless work in the founding of observatories at Mt Wilson, Palomar, and Yerkes, and the construction of several important telescopes. This was accomplished with wide support of the Carnegie Foundation, and also Cleveland Dodge. The prominent scientists who are collected here by Hale: Lewellys F. Barker, Jacques Loeb, George Higgs, Johann Georg Hagen, John M. Coulter, Thomas C. Chamberlain Robert S. Ball, Arthur R. Hinks, Samuel P. Langley, William Wallace Campbell, Heinrich Kayser, William Huggins George C. Comstock, Henry S. Carhart, and Henry Crew, including 7 brief biographical notes in Hale's hand on separate sheets.
