Black letter, folding engraved map of the world after Ortelius (Shirley 167), woodcut historiated and ornamental initials and head- and tailpieces, wodocut devices on title and colophon page, the map lightly colored in outline. This copy without the suppressed 6-leaf account of Drake's circumnavigation (of which copies were privately printed by Hakluyt and inserted in many but not all copies). (Without blanks X4 and 4F4, fore-edge of folding map backed with Japanese tissue and creased, restorations at head of gutter margins of title-leaf and of first 8 and last 25 leaves, affecting first letter of title, first letter and headline rules of dedicatory epistle (*2-3), and several letters or words of Table on 4F1-3, title and last leaf a bit soiled, fol. E1 misbound after E6.). Modern dark maroon blindstamped morocco. Provenance : Robert Watson (1705 inscription on title); Eliza Clarke (signature on *3r); short personal index on front flyleaf in an 18th-century hand. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST ENGLISH COLLECTION OF VOYAGES, first issue of the Bowes leaves (fols. Xx5-6, Yy1-6), containing a first-person account of Sir Jerome Bowes's embassy to Russia (written in the third person in the later issue). "Hakluyt with his collection of exemplary English voyages served the historic function of propagandist for English mercantilism and colonial expansion" (Streeter sale I:28). The book is "an invaluable treasure of nautical information" (Church). Part 3 is entirely devoted to the New World. The map, which is often lacking, is based on a combination of Ortelius maps, the central world oval being copied from his third world map of 1587, while the cloud border is from his earlier plates.
