Guy Pene du Bois American, 1884-1958 Figure - Chevreuse Valley, 1927 Signed Guy Pene du Bois and dated 27 (ll); inscribed as titled on the stretcher Oil on canvas 21 5/8 x 18 1/4 inches Exhibited: New York, Kraushaar Galleries, Exhibition of Paintings by Guy Pene du Bois, Dec. 6-28, 1927, no. 17R Figure - Chevreuse Valley is painted in the artist's mature style, characterized by stylized, rounded, nearly sculptural figures painted with barely perceptible brushstrokes. In 1924, the du Bois family had moved to France, renting a home in Garnes in the Chevreuse Valley. With financial support from painting sales from Kraushaar Galleries, they were able to remain there for six years. Du Bois later recalled, "It was in Garnes that I learned to paint." This work was painted during that sojourn, when the landscapes in his compositions became increasingly important to the artist. C Estate of Charles W. Kraushaar, Jr.
Overall fine condition. Yellow, dirty varnish layer, accretion of grime beneath frame. Overall excellent condition, no evidence of craquelure.
