(8¾x5¾), original printed wrappers. Scarce pamphlet touting the newly accessible lands of the west, as the Union Pacific sought to turn its great investment into solid profit by selling off the lands granted them by the government in exchange for building the railroad across the continent. The frontispiece map shows the whole U.S. and its major railroad lines, including the Union Pacific and Central Pacific spanning the continent, and planned branches to Oregon and Montana; the folding map after p.18 shows the grants along the first 200 miles of track in Nebraska, and is titled "Map of the Lands of the Union Pacific Railroad Company for the first 200 miles. Grants of 1862-64. Nebraska, 1869. Scale 8 miles per inch. The shaded tracts are Railroad Lands," measuring 31.3x58.2 cm; and the map on the rear wrapper show the grants between the Omaha railhead and Promontory Point, where the U.P. joined the C.P. This is the first edition, first printing; there were three printings dated 1870. Provenance: J. Thomas Sacramento Book Fair, 1/9/93 References: CS-G 4238 for 1872 edition. Railroad Economics, p 295.
