Lot of 13, notably including a pension document signed by John F. Hartranft, MOH-winning Major General who served as Governor of Pennsylvania 1873-1879. Partially printed doc., Harrisburg, PA, 18 July 1866. voucher for Hester Bentz, widow of Jacob Bentz, for Annuity to which she is entitled as a widow of a War of 1812 soldier. Signed by J.F. Hartranft. John Frederick Hartranft (1830-1889) was elected Colonel of the 4th PA Vols., at the very beginning of the war, April 1861, a 100-day unit.Their term expired the day before first Manassas, but Hartranft stayed to aid in the battle,e even as the remainder of the unit went home. For this he was awarded the Medal of Honor. He then recruited and became Colonel of the 51st PA Vols. He served with Burnside and fought at Roanoke, New Berne, 2nd Manassas, Chantilly, Fredericksburg, throughout Tennessee including Vicksburg, then going to the Wilderness campaign, Spotsylvania, and operations against Richmond and Petersburg, among others. He received his commission as Brig. Gen. in May 1864 and a brevet Maj. Gen. in the omnibus awards of March 1865 for gallantry in the recapture of Fort Stedman. After the war, he became Auditor-General of Pennsylvania, declining commission in the regular army. He served his home state as Governor from 1873 to 1879, during which time he completely reorganized the state militia. Commission for Leander Brewin as 1st Lieut. and Adj., in the 4th NJ Regt., dated 8 June 1865. Signed by Governor Joel Parker and Sec. of State W. Johnson. Commission for same as only 1st Lieut., dated 8 March 1865, and signed by same two officials. Plus a newspaper obituary, Burlington, NJ, April 30, 1886 announcing the death of Leander Brewin, "A Soldier in the Rebellion, a Sir Knight, an Odd Fellow and a School Trustee." The article notes that he was engaged in several battles, and at Gaines Mills he was taken prisoner and sent to Libby Prison. It is speculated in the article that the illness suffered at Libby contributed to his demise. Pay voucher for Oliver Matthews, 2nd Lieut & ADC, 6th NY, 2 Feb. 1863. Pay voucher for George Roman, 15th NY HA, 24 August 1864, docketed with Surgeon's note and signature stating that Roman is under medical care. Muster roll for the 31st NJ Vols., 31 Oct 1862 to Feb. 28, 1863. Col. Alexander Berthoud, listing 56 officers and men. Organized in Flemington, NJ, the 31st first went to Washington to man the defenses, then joined the Army of the Potomac. It was involved in Chancellorsville and the infamous "Mud March," among other events. this large document, 21 x 31 in., has old tape repairs and a bit of use wear. Manuscript list of Co. H, 7th NJ Vols., 1 Aug. 1862. Includes their present disposition, i.e. "In Hosp, Portsmouth Grove, RI," or "Home on furlough on acct. of sickness," or "supposed to have been take[n] prisoner June 30th." Out of 97 listed men, at least 21 are sick, either in the hospital or at home; 3 died in the Battle of Williamsburg (May 5); 7 died, presumably most of disease, but one listed as wounds received at Williamsburg; 5 were taken prisoner, 6 were discharged (and the main reason that happened before their term of service was up was often because of wounds); and at least 2 were deserters. Letter to Mr. Samuel Guthrie, Washington, 21 April 1865, informing him that he is forwarding his son's effects and apologizing for not being able to do so sooner, since there were "movements preventing me from forwarding [them]." This was right at the end of the war, and a lot happened just before and after Appomattox. The person to whom confirmation of the receipt of the effects was to be directed was Capt. of the Signal Corps, W.G. McCreary, presumably Guthrie's unit. Letter to Maj. William Allen Dept. Cumberland, about a pay account. On Office O.S. Mil. Agency letterhead, signed by R.L. Stewart. Gallipolis, OH, 2 Sept. 1864. 4pp letter, Port Elizabeth (NJ), 6 July 1862. Eugene Haines to "Howard." Homefront news. Interesting note in second h
