Somewhat dampstained. Baker, Hettie Gray. Bookplates. Cleveland: Hyacinth Press, 1947. Stiff wrappers, string tied at spine. With 10 bookplates designed for Baker tipped in. 11 reproductions, tipped to disbound backing sheets, of the bookplates of Bushrod Washington, Woodrow Wilson, William Howard Taft, Henry Ward Beecher, George Bancroft, Oliver Wendell Holmes and other American notables The letter by Allen, author of the 1895 classic "American Book-plates", written on his printed stationery as American Corresponding Secretary of the Ex Libris Society of London, thanks Frank House Baer, Chicago business executive and avid collector, “for your new plates. They are excellent and I prize them.” He would mention them in his “Notes” in the Ex Libris Society Journal. Hettie Gray Baker was a Hollywood woman pioneer film editor at Fox studios; in 1930, she wrote the first book on the bookplates of Hollywood film stars and directors. This collection of her own bookplates includes descriptive comments by the Secretary of the American Society of Bookplate Collectors and Designers. The 11 bookplate reproductions were removed from the 1911 Limited Edition of Clifford Carver’s "Book-plates of Well-known Americans", 1 of 250 copies by the Princeton University Press.
