Beschreibung:

Includes six sixth-plate daguerreotypes of women, all seated. Two with tinting of cheeks, one of which also has a beautifully tinted scarf. All in full cases, one Union case and five pressed paper geometric cases. There are four sixth-plate ambrotypes, one a fairly typical seated portrait, but two have a somewhat 3-dimensional effect, and one of those is very unusual, but we were unable to remove it from the case to examine the backing; this image has photographer's identification of C.J. Goodridge, York, Pa. on pillow. The fourth ambro is an infant. All in full cases, one Union, three pressed paper. There is one sixth-plate tintype of two toddlers, with a slip of paper separate identifying them as "Ladd twins, Sylvia Maria & Melvin, Ohio." We did find Sylvia and Melvin Ladd, both age 11, in the 1870 census, and records that indicate at least Sylvia was born in December 1859. In full pressed paper case. In addition there are two ninth-plate ambrotypes of women (one maybe a teenager), both in split pressed paper cases. The consignor identifies some of these women as mixed race or "mulatto," but we believe this is a matter of opinion rather than firm identifications. Provenance: Dr. John W. Ravage Collection of African American Photography Condition: A few plates with scratches, especially from mat wear. Others excellent.
