Leiden: Christopher Raphelengius for Plantin, 1600. 4 o (241 x 162 mm). Text in Greek and Latin, with some Arabic and Hebrew printing. Woodcut printer's device on title, one folding plate and 44 engravings in text of the constellations by Jacob de Gheyn. (Lower corner of i2 torn away, two marginal paper-flaws on Aa2, some browning.) Contemporary citron morocco gilt for Jacques-Auguste de Thou and his second wife, Gasparde de La Chastre (Oliveri 216, fer 8), spine in seven compartments with six raised bands, their monogram in compartments (a few small stains). Provenance : Jacques-Auguste and Gaspard de Thou (1553-1617; binding, manuscript shelfmarks on pastedowns and front cover); Richard Heber (inkstamp); acquired from Scribner Rare Books, 1969. THE DE THOU COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION of Grotius's redaction of the Phaenomena ("astronomy") of Aratus, the celebrated didactic poem of the third century B.C. which describes the relative positions of the chief stars and constellations. It is here printed together with Latin translations of parts of the poem by Cicero, Germanicus, and Avienus, and includes Grotius's elaborate critical apparatus. The plates by Jacob de Gheyn are among the finest engravings of celestial symbols ever published. They were published separately in 1621. Adams A-1519; Lalande, p.135.
