Beschreibung:

GROSZ, GEORGE Exceptional group of approximately forty letters by Grosz , both typed and hand-written, many with extensive illustrations and other personalized touches, drawn by Grosz, almost all addressed to his dealer and patron, Erich Cohn, most dated 1935-1945; Together with a quantity of material relating to the sale and exhibition of Grosz's paintings, including receipts of sales from Associated American Artists, ledger pages pertaining to the pictures exhibited at the 1941 show of Grosz's work at the Museum of Modern Art, letters to curators, from Grosz's wife, and much else; And a small group of letters and verses apparently by Grosz's friend and associate Herman Borchardt, whose release from imprisonment at Dachau in 1937 and travel to the U.S. was mediated by Grosz (and, behind the scenes, Cohn). Most of the letters in good condition, a few sheets on poor-quality paper and consequently embrittled or defective, some of the archival materials similarly toned or brittle. An extraordinary archive pertaining to the early years of Grosz's residence in the US. The artist was bitterly opposed to the Nazis, and permanently left Germany in 1933. Included among the letters (some of great length) are numerous requests for paints and other art supplies, as well as some extremely fine humorous drawings. Also in the collection are many folders of letters from other German artists of the period, including several hundred by Paul Kleinschmidt with gallery correspondence. The collection as a whole is a fascinating window into American art dealing in German Expressionism in the pre-War period. C Estate of Roberta K. Cohn & Richard A. Cohn, Ltd.
